Getting Assistance in the

Computer Learning Center

The computer learning center is available to assist students enrolled in any of our computer courses. We are located on the second floor, room B225. The learning center is maintained and run by faculty who can assist the students with assignments, projects or general computer questions. In addition to drop in help, we offer free one on one, 45 min. tutoring sessions and programming help classes when enough students request them.  You must have current student ID to use the computer labs.  Our hours are posted in the labs, but generally we are open from Monday-Thursday 8:00 am – 10:00 pm, Fridays 8:00 am – 6:00 pm.

If you are going to come to the learning center, please keep the following in mind when seeking assistance:

Programming:

  • Sitting down at the computer, opening the compiler and typing is not the way to approach a programming assignment.  When asking for assistance, please have some pseudo code or an outline written out so we may see your approach to the problem.

  • Please read the compiler error messages and attempt to correct your code before calling a T.A.  We have no problem helping you with syntax error messages, but it is your job to learn from your mistakes.  Asking the same question for the same error over and over again is just laziness.

Good Practices:

  • Please bring your textbook, notes and assignments. Seeing your notes will assist us when trying to understand your questions, and give us both something to refer to.

  • Take some time to read your notes or the assignment, jot down some questions you many have or areas you do not understand.

  • Cell phones: Please turn off or put your cell phone on vibrate.  If you do receive a call, take the call outside the lab, it might disturb others.  Also, when working with a T.A., interruptions disturb both of you, so answering a call will give the appearance of being rude.  Please take this into consideration.

  • Most computer applications have a Help feature, which actually has a lot of information.  You will notice the TA’s use the Help feature at times, no one can remember everything.  Try to do what you can before asking, but remember we can even help you on using the Help.

  • Although going over your assignment and discussing approaches to the problem with other students is encouraged, if you choose to get your assignment done by using a completed one from someone else, don’t expect help from a T.A.; ask the person you got it from.

  • Food and drinks are not permitted in the learning centers; all it takes is one accident to destroy the equipment.

  • Printing: Printing assignments and homework is allowed, printing anything at all is NOT.
