If the View as a time series table option is chosen, then data will be presented to the user in a grid-like table, with years (in 10 year increments) labeled along the top row of the table, and categories and courses labeled along the first column of the table.

If the View as a sortable list option is chosen, then data will be presented to the user in a linear, top-down fashion, in which the user may sort the data according to desired columns.

If the View by course popularity option is chosen, then selected courses will be presented to the user in a linear, top-down fashion. They will be sorted by the number of presences summed over all selected campuses/departments and selected years, in descending order.

Some campuses have multiple mathematics departments. In such cases 'combination' means a fictitious department which has all the courses any of the actual departments have.

If a course was offered in a particular campus/department in a particular year, then there is a presence of the course that year. In the Cajori 2 database, a "1" indicates that there is a presence of a course in a given year, and a "0" indicates that there is no presence of a course in a given year. For example, "Linear Algebra" may be not be offered in a department in 1935, which makes presence = 0, but it may be offered in that department in 1945, which makes presence = 1.

If a course was offered in a particular campus/department in a particular year, then there is a presence of the course that year, but there may also be additional instances. An instance is a variation of a course. For example, "Linear Algebra" may be offered in a department in 1945, which makes presence = 1. Additionally, if "Linear Algebra for Computer Scientists" is also offered in 1945 in that department, then instance = 2. In the Cajori 2 database, a course that has presence = 1 automatically has 1 or more instances.

The CSV file that may be downloaded will be specific to the table the user has on the screen at the moment he or she asks for the CSV download. I.e., it reflects his or her selections and the chosen summing option. When the downloaded CSV file is opened in a computing environment where Microsoft Excel is present, it will show up as an Excel table that has exactly the same content and format as what the user saw while working online - what he or she had on the screen at the time the download was requested.

Note that only the information that is currently displayed in the table on the webpage will be downloaded into a CSV file. Therefore, it is advised that the user make note of his or her selections by clicking the checkbox Selected Parameters and viewing the chosen parameters.

Unsummed data by school.

This option will display all presences/instances for a user's selection, organized by campus/department, then category, and finally course.

Example:

  1. Select department: Bryn Mawr College.
  2. Select all years from 1905 through 2005.
  3. Select category 5, Analysis Following Basic Calculus.
  4. Select "View as a time series table."
  5. Click Search.
  6. Choose option 1. under "Summing Options."

This search will output the course data for all analysis courses following basic calculus in the department at Bryn Mawr College from 1905 through 2005.

If the "Use course presences" radio button is selected, for each year from 1905 through 2005, a particular course will display a "0" or "1." A "0" indicates that the course was not present in the department at Bryn Mawr college for that year. A "1" indicates that the course was present in the department at Bryn Mawr college that year.

If the "Use course instances" radio button is selected, for each year from 1905 through 2005, a particular course will display some integer. A "0" indicates that there is no instance of the course in the department for that year. Any non-zero integer indicates as many varieties of the course was offered in the department that year. Notice that there were two varieties of Differential Equations offered at Bryn Mawr in 1905 and two varieties of Numerical Analysis offered at Bryn Mawr in 1925.

Category sums by school.

This option will display the sum of all presences/instances in a category for a user's selection, organized by department and then category.

Example:

  1. Select department: Bryn Mawr College.
  2. Select all years from 1905 through 2005.
  3. Select category 5, Analysis Following Basic Calculus.
  4. Select "View as a time series table."
  5. Click Search.
  6. Choose option 2. under "Summing Options."

This search will sum all the courses in the category "Analysis Following Basic Calculus" in the department at Bryn Mawr College from 1905 through 2005.

If the "Use course presences" radio button is selected, for each year from 1905 through 2005, the category sum will be the sum of all presences for the courses in this category for each year. So the number "3" under the year 1905 means that there were 3 courses in the category "Analysis Following Basic Calculus" offered in the department that year.

If the "Use course instances" radio button is selected, for each year from 1905 through 2005, the category sum will be the sum of all instances for the courses in this category for each year. So the number "4" under the year 1905 means that there were 4 courses in the category "Analysis Following Basic Calculus" offered in the department that year, 2 which were different varieties of the same course.

Sums by campus/department.

This option will display the sum of all presences/instances in campus/department for a user's selection, organized by campus/department.

Example:

  1. Select campus/departments: Bryn Mawr College and Reed College.
  2. Select all years from 1905 through 2005.
  3. Select category 1, Courses Potentially Leading to Calculus, and category 5, Analysis Following Basic Calculus.
  4. Select "View as a time series table."
  5. Click Search.
  6. Choose option 3. under "Summing Options."

This search will output the campus/department sums for the two categories selected in the department at Bryn Mawr College and Reed College from 1905 through 2005.

If the "Use course presences" radio button is selected, for each year from 1905 through 2005, each department sum will be the sum of all presences for the two selected categories for each year. So the number "6" for Bryn Mawr College in the year 1905 means that there were 6 course presences in the categories "Courses Potentially Leading to Calculus" and "Analysis Following Basic Calculus" offered in the department that year.

If the "Use course instances" radio button is selected, for each year from 1905 through 2005, each department sum will be the sum of all instances for the two selected categories for each year. So the number "7" for Bryn Mawr College in the year 1905 means that there were 7 course instances in the categories "Courses Potentially Leading to Calculus" and "Analysis Following Basic Calculus" offered in the department that year.

Course sums.

This option will display the sum of all presences/instances for selected courses in a user's selection, organized by category, and then course. If more than one department is selected by the user, then presences/instances from the multiple departments will be summed.

Example:

  1. Select departments: Bryn Mawr College and Reed College.
  2. Select all years from 1905 through 2005.
  3. Select category 1, Courses Potentially Leading to Calculus.
  4. Select "View as a time series table."
  5. Click Search.
  6. Choose option 4. under "Summing Options."

This search will output the sums for all the courses in the two categories selected from 1905 through 2005. The data from Bryn Mawr College and Reed College will be summed together.

If the "Use course presences" radio button is selected, for each year from 1905 through 2005, each course sum will be the sum of all presences for the two departments for each year. For course 13, "Analytic Geometry/Graphic Algebra" in 1945, the number "2" means that there were a total of 2 presences of this course offered across both Bryn Mawr College and Reed College that year.
